U!REKA unites to fine-tune EUI application
19 Dec 2019 00:00 | CommunicationAs the application deadline for the EU European Universities Initiative nears, the U!REKA consortium (the Urban Research and Education Knowledge Alliance) conducted a second workshop at OsloMet (Oslo Metropolitan University) from 2-3 December. The workshop focused on developing an improved version of the application to gain status as a European University.
European Universities are transnational alliances that will become the universities of the future, promoting European values and identity, and revolutionising the quality and competitiveness of European higher education 1.
The initiative, also referred to as EUI, is run by the European Commission (EC). U!REKA participated in the initial EUI bid earlier this year, but was unfortunately not selected as a participant.
Improving the application
The workshop consisted of two main parts: the four working groups gathered to work on their specific field (HERD (Higher education research and development), joint degree, research support and mobility), and developing an improved version of the EUI application.
Participants from all of the U!REKA consortium partners participated in the workshop.
Vice Rector for Research and Development at OsloMet, Per Martin Norheim-Martinsen, kicked off the workshop, followed by Michal Karpíšek, Secretary General in EURASHE (European Association of Institutions in Higher Education). EURASHE strives to support the development and transformation of European society through professional higher education and has been a vocal advocate of seeing universities of applied sciences awarded in the second EUI call. Karpíšek stated that the application for European Universities should be seen as an invitation to display diversity of excellence across our consortium.
The application deadline for European Universities is set for late February 2020.
